What an astonishing and confounding time to be alive, when the deluge of new music can stagger one’s consciousness like a meteor shower. I can only grab onto the streaming, sparkling trails for a second before a dozen other sparks capture my attention, then fade. But great records are like stars, beacons of light which give dimension to an otherwise impenetrable infinity, guiding me through the darkness. As we spin through space, ever quicker towards our oblivion, I look to the constellations, luminous clusters of sound, to find my way. Here was my map for 2014.

Honorable Mention

Spoon (first one I haven’t loved, though half of it is perfect)
New Pornographers (probably a slow-grower)
Parquet Courts
Angel Olsen
Timber Timbre
Sharon Van Etten
Sun Kil Moon
Run the Jewels
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
